Our monthly newsletter brings technical articles, events, and news to developers using Backblaze B2.

Hi there!   Welcome to the second edition of the Backblaze Developer Newsletter, bringing you news, articles, and events from the world of Backblaze B2.   This time, we've collected articles and blog posts from Backblaze and the wider cloud community, a podcast featuring CEO Gleb Budman sharing his thoughts on the evolution of cloud computing in general and Backblaze in particular, and an invitation to share your suggestions for the future direction of Backblaze B2. Build a Cloud Storage App in 30 Minutes Note: if you're already up to speed with Backblaze B2's S3-Compatible API, then feel free to skip to the next item!   You can use the AWS CLI or any of the AWS SDKs to build apps that access Backblaze B2 via its S3-Compatible API. If you're new to cloud object storage, on the other hand, this is the ideal way to get started. In about 30 minutes, you'll learn how to list and create objects in a Backblaze B2 bucket from the command line, Java, or Python. If you already have experience with Amazon S3, our quick-start guide will show you how to use the tools and techniques you already know to quickly build new applications and modify existing ones to interact with Backblaze B2.  What programming language would you like to see us add to the quick-start guide? The Cloudcast: Cost-Efficient Scale-Out Cloud Storage In this edition of The Cloudcast, Backblaze CEO Gleb Budman talks about the evolution of cloud storage, the shift from on-prem to cloud, best practices and the rise of ransomware. Gleb shares Backblaze's creation story, our evolution from PC and Mac backup to cloud object storage, and his vision of an independent cloud comprised of specialty cloud providers such as Backblaze, Twilio, and Cloudflare. Gleb and his host Aaron Delp pack a lot into the half-hour show! Back Up Your AWS S3 Bucket to Backblaze As our name suggests, backup is in our company DNA here at Backblaze, and backup is one of the primary use cases for Backblaze B2. Our customers back up servers, virtual machines, NAS devices, and even buckets located in other clouds to Backblaze B2. We know there are good reasons you might be using other, more complex, and expensive cloud providers, but it's useful to know that Backblaze B2 provides a cost-effective alternative to simply replicating your data to a different region of the same cloud. This blog post from Laurent Lemaire, co-founder at SimpleBackups, provides a straightforward guide to backing up an AWS S3 bucket to Backblaze B2. Use Fastly Compute@Edge with Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Backblaze customers enjoy free egress of content from Backblaze B2 to our CDN partners, including Fastly. Fastly's Compute@Edge platform allows you to write serverless functions that run on Fastly's points of presence (POPs), as close as possible to the end user. Compute@Edge apps can rewrite requests and responses, route requests to origins dynamically and based on any set of criteria, transform data as it passes through the POP, and more. A new article in the Backblaze B2 documentation provides a template Compute@Edge app that provides access to a private Backblaze B2 Bucket. You can create your own app from the template and deploy it as-is, or use it as the basis for your own custom logic. Share Your Ideas with the Backblaze Product Team Just like most online services, Backblaze B2 is constantly evolving. We've always prioritized customer feedback when planning the product roadmap, and now there's an easy way to share your ideas for new features and capabilities with our product team. The Backblaze Product Portal shows you the ideas we're currently considering; you can click an existing idea to add your weight to it, or hit the red + button to suggest a new one. While we can't guarantee we'll implement every idea, your input will help guide the future direction of Backblaze B2.
